What is life coaching, anyway?
Life coaching is an exciting journey from where you are right now to where you want to be. It’s an inspiring and motivating experience without judgement. It’s acknowledgement of your emotions and thoughts. It’s deep listening, active listening and powerful questioning. It’s the transformation of ideas into massive action to get you where you want to be. It’s motivation, encouragement, education and accountability. It’s uncovering what’s truly important to you and enhancement of self.
As you can see, I’m pretty passionate about coaching!
Coaching vs therapy
There’s still a bit of a knowledge gap when it comes to coaching and the information out there can seem confusing. I’ve heard people say they don’t need coaching because nothing is ‘wrong’. But let me tell you something important... people who invest in coaching are some of the most positive, self-aware people you’ll ever come across. They recognise that they’re worth investing in and believe in themselves. They know that setting goals and taking action is the key to their own success and personal development.
Coaching is focused on the present and the future
Therapy and counselling are focused on the present and past
People are investing in their self development and wellbeing like never before and coaching is becoming a really common part of people’s routines. This is not to say you absolutely need a coach, but if you make the decision to work with one it’s very likely you’ll have an amazing, transformative, life-changing experience. I know I did! I’ve worked with a number of coaches and I’ve honestly never felt more inspired or motivated. I come off every coaching call fired up and ready to achieve big!
Here are some reasons you should work with a coach:
To get clarity. You have a million ideas swimming around in your head and don’t know where to start, or you don’t know what’s next.
To help you tap into and uncover your strengths.
To learn new perspectives and techniques to live a more fulfilled, happy life.
To have unwavering support in reaching your goals. As a coach myself, and with the coaches I’ve worked with, it’s amazing to have someone to bounce ideas off and cheer you on the whole way.
To guide you through a big life transition such as a career change or big move.
To find purpose and fulfillment, feel happier, healthier and more connected to yourself.
How to choose a coach
The top tip I have for choosing a coach is stalk them on social media to see if you like their vibe! I chose one coach because of her amazing blog posts, another because I loved her Instagram profile. Their messages and content resonated completely with what I needed at the time. Yes, even coaches hire coaches! Choosing the right one is a feeling and you have to trust your gut.
It’s a good idea to identify a specific area you want to work on. I’ve worked with coaches for mindset, business, spirituality and feminine embodiment. I’m a transformation coach for international women, which means my clients are often women living abroad or thinking of a move abroad, going through a career change or thinking about it, leaving a job to travel and want to find their purpose and passion in their next steps. A lot of coaches now work in specific niche areas, so take the time to do some proper research and go with what feels right for you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to coaches and ask about their qualifications, coaching style and methods.
A word of caution: there are a lot of people out there calling themselves professional and qualified coaches - they’ve done a ‘fast track’ or ‘1’ day’ coaching course. While this is useful as an introduction into coaching, it doesn’t mean someone is fully qualified. Coaching is still an unregulated industry and while I’m sure there are great coaches who have done all kinds of courses, it’s always good to check credentials carefully. Look at where a coach has studied and read their testimonials. I got my ICF coaching qualification at the absolutely wonderful Beautiful You Coaching Academy which was an in-depth 6 month course and just an absolutely amazing experience. It was honestly the best and most valuable course I’ve ever studied!
Working with a coach is a personal choice and you have to be ready and willing to step into action. A coach does not give you all the answers, they help you figure it out yourself! If you choose to work with a coach, it’s one of the best investments you can make. Be prepared for huge personal growth, life-changing transformations and a happier life. Enjoy!
